Monroe's DeSiard street looking West, then and today....

The present site of Monroe was an established trade center along the banks of the Ouachita River years before the Louisiana Purchase unified American Colonization efforts. In the early 18th century, fur traders, adventurers, and explorers established residence here and traded among the Indians. As a result of their success in commerce, a primitive French settlement named "Prairie de Canots" (Prairie of the Canoes) was begun in 1780, marking the beginning of continuing habitation of the area now called "Monroe".

In May 1889, the first steamboat to travel the Ouachita River as far north as Fort Miro, so impressed the residents that they renamed the town in honor of the boat, the "President Monroe", and the current President of the United States, James Monroe.

The settlement on the west bank of the Ouachita began in the early 1880's when a railroad bridge was being constructed over the Ouachita River and the tracks were being extended westward toward Shreveport. A restaurant, store, lodging house, and several other small support businesses were established near the bridge site for the bridge workers and track layers. This area became known as "Trenton" and "West Monroe".

Through the years both Monroe and West Monroe have grown in population and in wealth. Residents of both cities have worked to make the two cities sisters in commerce, culture, and progress. The "Twin Cities" designation notes the cooperative effort exerted by residents from both sides of the beautiful Ouachita to make our area one for which we are proud to say, "WELCOME! Why not stay awhile?" ...(from a Frank & Janie's Menu)
